CAMPAIGN FOR PUBLIC SAFETY
2 min readDate: 17 Jan 2009, Saturday
Time: 5pm to 7pm
Place: “Smriti Upvan”, Opposite Uphaar Cinema, Green Park Extension
- Justice for Uphaar Tragedy Victims!
- No More Unsafe Public Places!
- India must have an Act for Protection of Life & Safety in Public Places
- India must have a National Public Safety Commission
We at AVUT (Association of Victims of the Uphaar Tragedy) strongly believed that the outcome of the recently delivered judgement in the Uphaar Fire Tragedy case will, infact, impact public safety and we hoped that in future public spaces in the country will become safer. It is with utmost pain, that we have come to realize that for our policy makers and decision makers, human life is of little value. Someone accused of killing a Chinkara is sentence to five years in prison but those accused of having caused the death of 59 innocent people have got away with a mere one year in jail – a pitiful six days in jail for each of the lives lost.
Is it fair that people who are responsible for Mass Tragedies be tried under section 304 A IPC (Rash & Negligent Act) and punish them with maximum sentence of only two years. Hence it is important to analyze whether existing laws are enough to handle Mass Tragedies in India.
AVUT is joining hand with a large number of civic organizations & networks to organize a public demonstration to demand justice for the victims of the UPHAAR tragedy and initiate a Citizens’ Campaign for Public Safety which will aim to mobilize people across all walks of life to bring pressure on the government to create a separate Act on Protection of Life & Safety in Public Places and a National Public Safety Commission, in keeping with mechanisms that already exist in countries like Canada, UK, Japan and South Korea.
We request you to join us on Saturday, 17 January 2009 from 5pm to 7pm at “SMRITI UPAVAN, in front of Uphaar Cinema, Green Park Extension, New Delhi to ensure that the innocent lives of our family members have not been lost in vain, but will enable ordinary citizens India to ensure the proper and effective implementation of safety laws and regulations that are honored more in breach than in observance by the enforcement agencies and non state players.
We urge you to support us for the cause of protection of human rights of all!
In solidarity,
Neelam Krishnamoorthy, President,
Association of the Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT )
